My story 2016

Sad to say, in late 2016 soon after our trip back to PNG, an incident occurred in which a man from our neighbourhood, whom I had been trying to help manage his money better and whom we were trying to lead to the Lord , flew into a violent rage fuelled by ICE, marijuana and alcohol. This caused me to go into depression and anxiety. This had happened several times before as a result of trauma but never as seriously as this time. Over a period of a year I sank deeper and deeper until I was spending almost all of the time in bed. I was frightened to drive the car and gave up all my ministries: teaching scripture, mentoring with Crossroads Prison Ministries and leading the ladies Bible study group. I even felt unable to write or answer emails. Praise the Lord though that in March this year I believe the Lord to come back out of the deep valley and return gradually to the land of the living. The Covid restrictions were actually a big help to me because I could start to communicate with people via email, Facebook and by phone without the personal contact I had found so hard.

Brewster and the Pilgrims When James I came to the throne, he adopted a moderate Protestant religious policy. Both Catholics and Puritans were forbidden to practice their religions. Many extreme Puritans left England for Holland where Puritanism was accepted. In 1607 Walter Raleigh had founded the English colony of Virginia in America and companies had begun trading between the colony and England. The Pilgrims were English Calvinists who, unlike the Puritans did not try to transform the Church of England, but actually left the Church to form an independent sect. This group appeared at the end of Elizabeth I’s reign and in the early period of James I’s reign. Since they were not in the king’s Church (i.e. the Church of England), the Pilgrims were effectively outlaws in the early 17th century. Their pastors were fined, put in the stocks and whipped. Some of them who published pamphlets criticizing the king and his Church had their ears sliced off, their noses split and their foreheads branded with the letters ‘SS’ (stirrer of sedition). In 1607 a group of Pilgrims managed to escape to Holland which, at that time, was the only country with complete freedom of religion. Here they could worship as they pleased. Thirty-five members, who had fled to Holland to avoid persecution, were recruited by an English stock company to go to Virginia to protect their business interests. The stock company financed the venture which, when it left England, included 102 men, women and children. The Mayflower The Pilgrim Fathers set sail from Plymouth on 16th September 1620 in the ‘Mayflower’ captained by Myles Standish and steered a course for Virginia. The ship was a double-decked, three-masted vessel. On board the tiny vessel were 100 emigrants, less than half of whom were Pilgrims. Richard Clyfton Richard Clyfton had been the vicar of Marnham in 1586 and rector of Babworth since 1586. Summoned before the ecclesiastical courts in 1591 and 1593 for not wearing the surplice, for not announcing holy days, and for refusing to use the cross in baptism, he was cited for non-conformity and then deprived of his position on March 15, 1605, in the same court actions that deprived Robert Southworth. On March 6, 1607, Clyfton was summoned as the “pretended minister or curate of Bawtry,” but he did not respond and was excommunicated on April 24. He preached in early 1608 at Sutton cum Lound (James Brewster’s church), before emigrating to Amsterdam as the pastor of William Brewster’s congregation. James Brewster William Brewster’s brother James Brewster was vicar of Sutton cum Lound from 1594 to 1614 and of Gringley-on-the-Hill from 1604 to 1617. Although he was not deprived for non-conformity, James Brewster had a history of conflict with church authorities. He was prosecuted in 1595 for irregularities in acquiring the position of vicar at Sutton, succeeding his uncle Henry Brewster; and because his practice in administering communion did not follow the prescribed formula. He refused to bury a body in a shroud decorated with a cross, and he baptised infants without making the sign of the cross. He was excommunicated briefly in 1597, “for various offences” that were apparently connected with irregular financial administration of the hospital of St. Mary Magdalene in Bawtry, of which James Brewster was the “Master.” William Brewster appeared in court on James’ behalf at this time. In 1605, Edmund Thurland (himself presented for refusing to take communion) sued James Brewster for having called him “an atheiste, a knave and a whoremaster.” Brewster admitted to the charge and was assigned penance. As vicar of Sutton cum Lound, James Brewster was the immediate superior of the curate at Scrooby, and he was responsible for choosing the curate. From 1603 to 1607, the Scrooby curate was a Robert Markham, about whom little is known.

Strange entry Stragglethorpe is a village in the civil parish of Brant Broughton with Stragglethorpe, in the North Kesteven district of Lincolnshire, England. The village is situated approximately 8 miles (13 km) east of Newark-on-Trent Stragglethorpe was a separate civil parish until 1931 when it merged with Brant Broughton. Second Stragglethorpe is located in the county of Nottinghamshire, East Midlands, one mile north of the town of Cotgrave, four miles east of the major city of Nottingham, and 105 miles north-west of London. Stragglethorpe lies six miles north of the Leicestershire border. Stragglethorpe falls within the district council of Rushcliffe, under the county council of Nottinghamshire. Explanation of name Stragglethorpe is first recorded as Straggelthorpe in 1796 There is a place similarly named in Lincolnshire for which we have early forms Tragertorp , Stragerthorp (1212, 1242). The latter name is somewhat difficult of explanation and it may be that the Nottinghamshire name has no connection with it. The suggestion may even be hazarded that the name is really a name of the late nickname type. The name would seem to be applied to an area containing some three or four small farms and it may be that it should be interpreted as 'straggling xxxxcccxxxx"x Edna Woodward Cottam née Cave Birth: July 19 1886 Hounslow, Middlesex, England, United Kingdom Charles Cave 1867–1940 Facts Select fact Age 0 — Birth 24 Feb 1867 • Newton On Trent, Lincolnshire, England Age 2 — Birth of brother Samuel Cave(1869–1935) Jun 1869 • Newton On Trent, Lincolnshire, England Age 4 — Residence 3 Apr 1871 • Newark Road, Newton On Trent, Lincolnshire, England Select fact Age 14 — Residence 4 Apr 1881 • The Village, Newton On Trent, Lincolnshire, England Select fact Age 23 — Marriage Jun 1890 • Newark On Trent District, Nottinghamshire, England Elizabeth Brewster (1869–1945) Age 24 — Birth of son George Cave(1891–1955) 29 Mar 1891 • East Drayton, Nottinghamshire, England Age 24 — Residence 5 Apr 1891 • 2 Church Walk, East Drayton, Nottinghamshire, England Age 31 — Death of brother Henry Cave(1860–1898) Dec 1898 • Brentford, Middlesex, England Age 32 — Death of mother Sarah Wade(1827–1899) 12 Nov 1899 • Newton On Trent, Lincolnshire, England Age 34 — Residence 1 Apr 1901 • Front Street, Brant Broughton, Lincolnshire, England Age 34 — Death of sister Anne Elizabeth Cave(1859–1901) Jun 1901 • Dewsbury, Yorkshire, England Select fact Age 44 — Residence 02 Apr 1911 • Brant Broughton, Nottinghamshire, England Age in 1911: 43; Marital Status: Married; Relation to Head: Head Age 47 — Death of father Samuel Cave(1836–1914) 30 Jun 1914 • Newton On Trent, Lincolnshire, England Age 68 — Death of brother Samuel Cave(1869–1935) 9 November 1935 • Lincolnshire, England Age 70 — Death of brother George Cave(1864–1938) 21 Jan 1938 • Rampton, Nottinghamshire, England Age 72 — Residence 1939 • Lincolnshire (Parts of Kesteven), England Marital Status: Married Age 73 — Death 9 Nov 1940 • Lincolnshire, England Family Parents Samuel Cave 1836–1914 Sarah Wade 1827–1899 Spouse and children Elizabeth Brewster 1869–1945 George Cave 1891–1940 To explore more about Charles Cave Deceased Birth name: Charles Cave Birth: 1867 Newton on Trent, Lincolnshire, England no Baptism 24 Mar 1867 Newton-Upon-Trent, Lincolnshire, England Marriage: Spouse: Elizabeth 1890 Residence: 1881 Newton Upon Trent, Lincolnshire, England Residence: 1891 East Drayton, Nottinghamshire, England, United Kingdom Residence: 1911 Newark, Nottinghamshire, England, United Kingdom Parents: Samuel Cave Sarah Cave Wife: Elizabeth Cave Son: George Cave Siblings: Sarah Jane Marrison (born Cave) George Cave Samuel Cave Samuel Cave (father) Age44 Residence NoteThe Village Birth Year (Estimated)1837 BirthplaceHeckdyke, Lincolnshire, England Marital StatusMarried Occupation Shoemaker Relationship to Head of HouseholdHead Event TypeCensus Event Date1881f5gdhv Event PlaceNewton Upon Trent, Lincolnshire, England NameSarah Cave SexFemale Age50 Residence NoteThe Village Birth Year (Estimated)1831 Birthplace Whitton On Humber, Lincolnshire, England Wife Census 1881 Newton Upon Trent, Lincolnshire, England Charles Cave Son is Age14 The Village Birth Year (Estimated)1867 Birthplace: Newton On Trent, Lincolnshire, England Marital StatusSingle OccupationFarm Day Boy Samuel Cave son SexMale Age12 Residence The Village Birth Year (Estimated)1869 BirthplaceNewton On Trent, Lincolnshire, England Marital StatusSingle OccupationScholar Elizabeth wife of Charles Birth Westborough, Lincolnshire Residence at census Sep 29 1939 General Stores, High Street, North Kesteven, Lincolnshire (Parts of Kesteven), England Name BirthMarital statusOccupation Head Charles Cave Feb 24 1867MarriedBoot Repairer Wife (implied) Elizabeth Cave age in census 69 Dec 12 1869MarriedUnpaid Domestic Duties Brief Life History of Charles When Charles Cave was born in 1867, in Newton on Trent, Lincolnshire, England, United Kingdom, his father, Samuel Cave, was 30 and his mother, Sarah, was 36. As burial record for William senior indicate that the grave was re-opened , it can be surmised that the baby was re-buried with his father either before or after William senior died. An account of the work accident leading to Wilhelm's death was recorded by "The Illustrated Australian News", Sat. 10th June, 1882, p.?2 An article from "The Argus", 8th June 1882 summarizes the inquest into Wilhelm's death.
