Cave ancestry sent to Bill, Edna and Norma

What I have found out about Edna Woodward Cave's ancestry. Dear Norma and Edna, It has seemed to Bill that Dad didn't know anything about family members in England beyond the immediate family he grew up in. This year on the weekend of the coronation, MyHeritage.com advertised that they were making a lot of records freely available during that weekend. So I signed up for a 14-day free trial with their site. There was also a mystery on my mother's side in my ancestry which I wanted to try to solve. In that fortnight I made a beginning on Cottam and Cave and on my maternal great-grandfather. However by the end of that time, I hadn't yet discovered who was the father of Edna Woodward Cave. So I wanted to continue but I did not want to pay for a subscription. I have been able to do so by taking advantage of the offer My Heritage gives when you cancel your free subscription before the date when they start to charge you. They offer you a further 14 days free. I have in the months since then taken out free subscriptions using all of my email addresses and Bill's and then accepting the extra offer on each one. I have in addition to these signed up for free trials with Ancestry.com using 3 of our email addresses. It has taken all of these to finally reach my goals. I will now start sharing with you what I have found. Of course we knew that the mother of Joseph George Cottam was Edna Woodward Cave born on born on 19 Jul 1886. Her mother was Mary Woodward who was born in September 1858 in Tuxford, Nottinghamshire. Her father was Henry Cave who was born in September 1860 in Gainsborough, Lincolnshire (or possibly Jan 6 1861 Holy Trinity, Gainsborough. However, it may be that he was christened at Holy Trinity Church on thar date.). He married Mary Woodward in October 1883 in Brentford, Middlesex. He earned his living as a bootmaker and boot repairer. Their first daughter Alice Cave was born in June 1885 in Hounslow, Middlesex. Mary was 28 years old when their daughter Edna Woodward Cave was born on 19 July 1886 in Hounslow, Middlesex. In June 1889, aged 31, she gave birth to their son George Cave in Hounslow, Middlesex. Then when Mary was 36 her third daughter Lily Cave was born in March 1894 at Tattersall, Twickenham, Middlesex. Mary was 41 when her husband Henry passed away in December 1898 in Brentford, Middlesex, at the age of 38. They had been married for 15 years. The birth place of Edna Woodward Cave, Hounslow, Middlesex, England is located in these administrative areas: Civil parish: Isleworth Ecclesiastical parish: St Stephens Registration district: Brentford Until I had searched this out on Google I had found that various entries about members of the family in different family trees seemed to clash. Afterwards though, I understood why Henry's death was recorded in some trees as having been in Isleworth and in Brentford in others , for example. That same census of 1 Apr 1901 shows her mother Mary Woodward Cave living at 38 Strawberry Hill Road, Twickenham, Middlesex, described as widowed cook to Cuthbert Burgoyne, wine merchant from Kew and his wife Beatrice. It also records that her son George was living there with her. There is what seems to be a conflicting entry in the same census. Lily her youngest daughter is listed as a visitor aged 7 together with brother George aged 12 in the home of Henry E Langstone and his wife Hannah in Twickenham, Middlesex. This may not be a conflict. On census night she was visiting aged 7 together with brother George aged 12 in the home of Henry E Langstone and his wife Hannah At the time of the census in 1911 she was working as a servant for Robert and Amelia Watling innkeepers of the Brentford Inn in Brentford, Twickenham, Middlesex (aged 17). Lily was married in July 1915 in Newark, Nottinghamshire when she was 21 years old. She married Thomas H Thurman. They had one child during their marriage Lilian Woodward Thurman who was born on 1 Mar 1921 in Coventry, Warwickshire and died in the same town in December 1994. Lily died in December 1957 in Meriden, Warwickshire, at the age of 63. When George Cave was born in April 1889 in Hounslow, Middlesex, his father, Henry, was 28 and his mother, Mary, was 31. He lost his father when he was only 9 years old. He had three sisters. In 1901 at the time of the census he was living at 38 Strawberry Hill Road, Twickenham, Middlesex with his widowed mother who was working as cook to Cuthbert Burgoyne, a wine merchant. The 1911 census showed that George had joined the military in England. In 1924 he departed by ship from Coventry and on 30 November 1924 he arrived in Saint John, New Brunswick, Canada. Edna's cousin George Cave was born on 29 March 1891. At that time his parents Charles and Elizabeth were living at 2 Church Walk, East Drayton, Nottinghamshire. In 1911 he was living with his parents in North Kesteven, Lincolnshire and was a cycle dealer. He married Evelyn D Millhouse in March 1920 in Newark, Nottinghamshire. In the census on September 29 1939 they were living in High Street, Brant Broughton, North Kesteven, Lincolnshire. At that time he was a bus driver. He died between July and September 1955 in North Kesteven, Lincolnshire, England at the age of 64. To try to understand why Edna and Woodward Cave was living with her father's younger brother Charles we need to look at her mother's story. Focus on Mary Woodward Cave When Mary Woodward was born in September 1858 in Tuxford, Nottinghamshire, her father, George Woodward, was 33, and her mother, Hannah, was 30. A census on 8 Apr 1861shows her at age 3 living in Tuxford, Nottinghamshire, England. 1861 Newcastle Street, Tuxford, Nottinghamshire, England A census taken on 3 Apr 1871 shows her living at the age of 13 with her parents in Newcastle Street, Tuxford, Nottinghamshire. On 4 Apr 1881 at the age of 23, she was living at 273 Glossop Rd, Nether Hallam, Yorkshire. Mary was working as a servant (housemaid/domest servant) in the home of Dr William Jackson Cleaver and his wife Julia. Mary Woodward married Henry Cave in Brentford, Middlesex, in October 1883 when she was 26 years old. On 5 Apr 1891 she was living in Bell Road, Isleworth, Middlesex, with her husband and children Another record says Bell Road, Hounslow, Middlesex. The Emma is actually an Emma Cavey (1887–1953) who was born in London in April 1887. The Artificial Intelligence gave a wrong connection.) As I have told you earlier Mary was widowed at the age of 41 when Henry Cave died in December 1898 at the age of 38. We have also seen that she became the cook at the home of a wine merchant in Twickenham, Middlesex. We saw evidence that she had her second youngest child George living with her there in 1901 but we don't know where the youngest, Lily, was living. Lily was only 4 when her father died. By the age of 17 she was working as a servant for Robert and Amelia Watling innkeepers of the Brentford Inn in Brentford, Twickenham, Middlesex. Nor do we know what happened to Alice the eldest after her father's death when she was 13. In fact I could find only one more record of her life after the census on 5 April 1891 when at the age of 5 she was living with her parents and her younger siblings Edna and George in Bell Road, Hounslow, Isleworth, Middlesex. That record is from the census on 2 April 1911 which shows her living in Horsell, Surrey, England. By that time she was 25. Of course we have seen that Edna had been sent to live with her Uncle Charles and family before the census of April 1901. Mary then married Benjamin Bonner (1840–1924) in 1909 in Newark, Northamptonshire. The 2 April 1911 census shows her living in Stragglethorpe, Lincolnshire, England as a farmer/cottager's wife living with her husband. In 1921 she is shown as living with her husband in Brant Broughton, Lincolnshire, England as a retired farmer's wife. When Benjamin Bonner was born in July 1840 in Stragglethorpe, Lincolnshire, his father, John, was 31 and his mother, Charlotte, was 25. He married Mary Ann Boot, the daughter of Thomas Boot and Anne Gilbert in April 1863 and they had five children together. He then married Mary Woodward in April 1909 in Newark, Northamptonshire. Isabel Stanywell was born in Sturton, Nottinghamshire, England Some records say Sturton le Steeple, Nottinghamshire because that is what the town is now called. (See notes below.) Robert died in 1722. Notes about Sturton The name "Sturton" means "The Homestead on the Street" The Homestead in question was almost certainly a major Roman settlement with direct links to Segelocum, the "Street" can only be the Roman Street on which it is built. The addition of "le-steeple" in 1823 probably refers to the twelve pinnacles on the Church tower that can be seen for miles around and was probably done to differentiate it from Sturton-by-Stow that is on the same road over the river in Lincolnshire. At this point I came to a dead end. I could not find any leads to Robert's parents.

My story 2016

Sad to say, in late 2016 soon after our trip back to PNG, an incident occurred in which a man from our neighbourhood, whom I had been trying to help manage his money better and whom we were trying to lead to the Lord , flew into a violent rage fuelled by ICE, marijuana and alcohol. This caused me to go into depression and anxiety. This had happened several times before as a result of trauma but never as seriously as this time. Over a period of a year I sank deeper and deeper until I was spending almost all of the time in bed. I was frightened to drive the car and gave up all my ministries: teaching scripture, mentoring with Crossroads Prison Ministries and leading the ladies Bible study group. I even felt unable to write or answer emails. Praise the Lord though that in March this year I believe the Lord to come back out of the deep valley and return gradually to the land of the living. The Covid restrictions were actually a big help to me because I could start to communicate with people via email, Facebook and by phone without the personal contact I had found so hard.

Brewster and the Pilgrims When James I came to the throne, he adopted a moderate Protestant religious policy. Both Catholics and Puritans were forbidden to practice their religions. Many extreme Puritans left England for Holland where Puritanism was accepted.In 1607 Walter Raleigh had founded the English colony of Virginia in America and companies had begun trading between the colony and England. The Pilgrims were English Calvinists who, unlike the Puritans did not try to transform the Church of England, but actually left the Church to form an independent sect. This group appeared at the end of Elizabeth I’s reign and in the early period of James I’s reign. Since they were not in the king’s Church (i.e. the Church of England), the Pilgrims were effectively outlaws in the early 17th century. Their pastors were fined, put in the stocks and whipped. Some of them who published pamphlets criticizing the king and his Church had their ears sliced off, their noses split and their foreheads branded with the letters ‘SS’ (stirrer of sedition). In 1607 a group of Pilgrims managed to escape to Holland which, at that time, was the only country with complete freedom of religion. Here they could worship as they pleased. Thirty-five members, who had fled to Holland to avoid persecution, were recruited by an English stock company to go to Virginia to protect their business interests. The stock company financed the venture which, when it left England, included 102 men, women and children. The Mayflower The Pilgrim Fathers set sail from Plymouth on 16th September 1620 in the ‘Mayflower’ captained by Myles Standish and steered a course for Virginia. The ship was a double-decked, three-masted vessel. On board the tiny vessel were 100 emigrants, less than half of whom were Pilgrims. Richard Clyfton Richard Clyfton had been the vicar of Marnham in 1586 and rector of Babworth since 1586. Summoned before the ecclesiastical courts in 1591 and 1593 for not wearing the surplice, for not announcing holy days, and for refusing to use the cross in baptism, he was cited for non-conformity and then deprived of his position on March 15, 1605, in the same court actions that deprived Robert Southworth. On March 6, 1607, Clyfton was summoned as the “pretended minister or curate of Bawtry,” but he did not respond and was excommunicated on April 24. He preached in early 1608 at Sutton cum Lound (James Brewster’s church), before emigrating to Amsterdam as the pastor of William Brewster’s congregation. James Brewster William Brewster’s brother James Brewster was vicar of Sutton cum Lound from 1594 to 1614 and of Gringley-on-the-Hill from 1604 to 1617. Although he was not deprived for non-conformity, James Brewster had a history of conflict with church authorities. He was prosecuted in 1595 for irregularities in acquiring the position of vicar at Sutton, succeeding his uncle Henry Brewster; and because his practice in administering communion did not follow the prescribed formula. He refused to bury a body in a shroud decorated with a cross, and he baptised infants without making the sign of the cross. He was excommunicated briefly in 1597, “for various offences” that were apparently connected with irregular financial administration of the hospital of St. Mary Magdalene in Bawtry, of which James Brewster was the “Master.” William Brewster appeared in court on James’ behalf at this time. In 1605, Edmund Thurland (himself presented for refusing to take communion) sued James Brewster for having called him “an atheiste, a knave and a whoremaster.” Brewster admitted to the charge and was assigned penance. As vicar of Sutton cum Lound, James Brewster was the immediate superior of the curate at Scrooby, and he was responsible for choosing the curate. From 1603 to 1607, the Scrooby curate was a Robert Markham, about whom little is known.
